A little sun protection, maybe?
Many of us think we can slather a little sunscreen on our face and we’re done. In fact, we’re really just beginning.
For starters, we’re not using enough sunscreen. We need to use about 1 ounce (a shot full) and apply it ½ hour before going outside. Then we need to reapply it every 2 hours.
Sound crazy? Unfortunately, it’s no joke.
Over 1 million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. If you don’t want to be one of them, there are other ways to help stay healthy.
-
Buy yourself a long mirror and place it in good light. Then once a month get naked. Look for irregular moles. Include hands, feet and top of head. Do this with your kids and spouse, too, once a month. I can tell you I wish I had done it with my spouse.
-
Do not rely on sunscreen alone even if you do apply it properly. It’s difficult to know exactly how much we’re using when we sweat it off, rub it off, or when it wears off.
-
Cover up and save a life. Reduce your chances of getting skin cancer by using other products in addition to sunscreen, such as UV hats, UV umbrellas and UV clothing.
-
See a dermatologist once a year. They can see things you can’t.
It’s not uncommon for us to think skin cancer is only skin deep, but when it’s left unchecked or innocently overlooked, it can go deep, to internal organs, such as the brain. It’s so easy to protect yourself. Give yourself the gift of prevention.
